At Williams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we provide clear, detailed aftercare instructions so you know exactly what to expect and how to support your recovery.

Whether you have recently undergone cosmetic reconstruction, received a temporary restoration, had a tooth extraction, or completed a filling, we are committed to guiding you every step of the way. Our team proudly supports patients throughout Brandon, FL, helping you heal comfortably and maintain excellent oral health at home.

Cosmetic Reconstruction Surgery After Care

Remember that it will take time for your mouth to adjust to the feel of your new bite. When the bite is altered or the position of the teeth is changed, it may take several days for the brain to recognize the new alignment as normal. If you continue to detect any high spots or concerns with your bite, call Williams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry so we can schedule an adjustment appointment.

It is normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold following cosmetic reconstruction. The teeth require time to heal after the tooth structure is modified. Your gums may also feel sore for a few days.

Warm saltwater rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) three times a day can help reduce discomfort and swelling. A mild pain medication such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin), taken every 3–4 hours, should ease any residual discomfort. Do not be concerned if your speech is slightly affected for the first few days—your mouth will adapt.

Additional Care Notes
  • Avoid extremely hard or sticky foods until you feel fully comfortable with your bite.
  • Continue excellent brushing and flossing habits unless otherwise instructed.
  • Contact our office if discomfort worsens instead of improving.

Temporary Crown & Bridge Aftercare

Crowns and bridges typically require two or three appointments to complete. During your first visit, the teeth are prepared, and impressions are taken. Temporary crowns or bridges are placed to protect your teeth while your custom restoration is being crafted.

Because the teeth may be anesthetized during treatment, your tongue, lips, and cheeks may feel numb. Avoid eating and drinking hot beverages until the numbness has fully worn off.

If a temporary crown becomes loose or comes off, call our office and bring the temporary with you so we can re-cement it. It is essential that temporaries remain in place to prevent teeth from shifting, which could affect the fit of your final restoration. To protect your temporary crown, avoid:

  • Sticky foods: Can pull off the temporary.
  • Hard foods: May crack or loosen the temporary.
  • Chewing on the opposite side: Helps prevent unnecessary pressure.

Brush normally, but floss with care. Instead of pulling the floss up, slide it out from the side to avoid dislodging the temporary. Sensitivity to pressure or temperature is normal and typically resolves after the final restoration is placed. Mild pain medication may be used as directed. If your bite feels uneven or discomfort persists, call our office for assistance.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

If bleeding or oozing continues after your visit, place another gauze pad over the area and bite firmly for 30 minutes. Repeat as needed. After a blood clot forms, it is critical not to disturb it, as the clot supports healing. For the first 72 hours, avoid:

  • Rinsing vigorously.
  • Using straws.
  • Smoking.
  • Drinking alcohol.
  • Brushing teeth near the extraction site.

These activities may loosen or dissolve the clot and delay healing.

Additional aftercare may include icing the area to minimize swelling, staying hydrated, and eating soft foods until comfort improves. Follow any medication instructions provided by your dentist.

Contact our office if you experience prolonged bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection.

Dental Filling Aftercare

It is normal to experience mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure following a dental filling. Injection sites may also be tender. Tylenol, Ibuprofen (Motrin), or aspirin taken every 3–4 hours as needed can ease discomfort.

If sensitivity increases or persists beyond several days, please contact Williams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. You may chew on composite fillings as soon as the anesthetic is fully worn off, as they are completely hardened before you leave the office.

If your bite feels uneven or you experience ongoing pain, please call us for an adjustment appointment.
